2012 Women’s History Month
The Hopkinsville Human Relations Commission sponsors Women’s History Month activities which annually pay tribute to women who have contributed much to our community. Awards are named in honor of four local women from the past whose actions helped to mold our community.
The Fannie Bronson Postell Woman of the Year Award, named for the woman who established Attucks High School, recognizes a woman, (or group of women), in the community whose actions and activities affect changes in the foundation of our community. The woman who receives this award has demonstrated that women play a major role in the betterment of the community. She encourages and inspires all women to make a difference in their own way.
The Katherine Peden Award Community Service honors a woman in Christian County who sets the example of outstanding community service. Named for the first woman to serve as state commerce commissioner in 1963. She also served on JFK’s ‘President’s Commission on the Status of Women’, President Johnson’s ‘National Advisory Committee on Civil Disorders’, and became the first woman to be nominated for the U.S. Senate.
The Marjorie Parker Award for Overcoming Obstacles honors a woman who inspires others through her example of facing challenges with courage and determination. Mrs. Parker was the first African American principal to enter into a desegregated school system. She taught 26 years and was a principal for 13 years.
The Rosemary M. Pace Award for Leadership with Youth is named for an educator who was a home economics instructor at Bethel College (1954-1955) prior to teaching at Fort Campbell schools for 18 years. When she retired she was a very active volunteer in the community (volunteered for over 10 organizations). She started a Regional FHA scholarship that to date has donated a combined $60,000 to 356 scholarship recipients.

Women Educating Women: “Give $10 Ask 10” Campaign
The Commission will offer, for the first time, an educational scholarship to a deserving woman in Christian County. The name of the scholarship is “Women Educating Women”. We have themed this scholarship funding event the “Give $10 Ask 10” campaign. (Click for more information)
